Oppenheimer had been cleared of sending information to the Soviets and of being a security risk. For more than a decade afterward his clearance the FBI kept him under surveillance. Nor, for the same length of time, would they give Toni a security clearance. She tried to drown herself. She was rescued. A few days later she hung herself in the family beach house.
